A new feature we will be running over the next few months is bi-weekly reviews of great beer venues that we have discovered. We aim to take you on a journey across Europe in search of great beer and what a better place to start than our hometown of Ghent. Renowned for its’ rich history and traditional speciality Belgian brews we have featured two unique venues for you this month…

Het Waterhuis Aan De Bierkant (Groentenmarkt 9, 9000 Ghent) is located on the peaceful waterfront only a stone’s throw away from Ghent castle. If you are looking for a taste of tradition and plenty of variety of beer then this may be the place for you…

Variery of beers
This cosy haunt boasts almost every conceivable beer you could want. The variety of beers is over 160, with 17 on draught. Giving you one of the largest selections of finest beers in Ghent. (5/5)

Quality of beers
The quality of the beer is exceptional; with so many to choose from, you’ll be spoilt for choice. (5/5)

On the other hand the selection of food is limited to classic beer snacks. The snacks are still great, but play a very secondary role to the beer. You can always pop next door to Chez Leontine to enjoy fresh Flemish specialities. (2/5)

The bar attracts a varied mix of friendly locals and inquisitive tourists. The vibe is very relaxed and is complimented by the beautiful views of the canal. (4/5)

Customer service

The well trained and down-to-earth staff are multilingual and extremely informed about the beers they serve. Ask for a recommendation and they will know exactly what you should try. (4/5)

Het Waterhuis has a warm, cosy feel inside although with limited seating (around 20 – 30 chairs). Step outside onto the terrace and you’ll find more seating, brought to life by the surrounding flower baskets and, of course, that stunning river view.  All in all, a charming, traditional Belgian pub. (4/5)

Have you visited Ghent on your search for great beer? If so what did you think? We will be searching high and low across the globe for great beer venues, please send us your recommendations of your favourite beer scene...
